CANAL ARTSWALKCANAL ARTSWALK Originally uploaded by random sass & musing. saturday the 'rents & i headed into downtown richmond for the CANAL artswalk on the james. we anticipated seeing plenty of local artists displaying their wares but were surprised by the lack of turnout. still, we heard live music & walked the 3 1/4 mile canal loop, learning more about the historical foundations for it. 19 May 2005i've been listening to weezer's beverly hills (on the recently released make believe album) on repeat now for 1 hour, 42 minutes. not to mention the art is the spiff. DIG IT. (that is but a poor representation. seeing it in person is even better.) i had to go to the courthouse today to have an emergency order entered. coming back from saving the day, i stepped in some suspicious puddle in the stairwell. i felt the splash on my sandals & naked toes. i cringe to think of what it could be & i was afraid to look. back at the office i think it's beer. in the stairwell of a state building. a puddle. of beer. at 8:30 AM. that's in the morning. i return to the office thinking i smell beer. i ask all my coworkers. nobody else smells the beer. they all marvel that i can stand on my one foot & raise my other foot to my nose to smell it. i don't smell beer there, but i rinse my shoe off anyhow. it still reeks of beer somewhere. either my shoe is drunk or one of my coworkers is drunk. or i am drunk. i'm fairly certain i drank no liquids but water last night so i'll go with option A. 17 May 2005i have been passed the music baton by the lovely CASEY. so let's get on with it: Total volume of music files on my computer: bwahahahaha. if you've seen my ghetto-tastic 'puter, you'll know that downloading music is not it's strongpoint. i am, however, remedying such a thing at the end of this month, i hope. i shall have a newer! better! computer. & yes, it's a PC. don't hate moi. The last CD I bought was: EARLIMART, treble & tremble although i am about to order COPELAND's in motion so technically i've bought that. in my head. Song playing right now: the sporting life by THE DECEMBERISTS Five songs I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me: 1 | lebanese blond by THEIVERY CORPORATION 2 | take care by COPELAND 3 | get it faster by JIMMY EAT WORLD 4 | portions for foxes by RILO KILEY 5 | undo me by jennifer knapp Five people to whom I'm passing the baton: AARON & JEN & MIKE & PAUL & THESTEWART, all of whom i'm sure will make me proud. 16 May 2005preparing for moving & asundry things like that. preparing for eric's arrival in NC. preparing for summer. preparing for new life chapters. apparently not preparing blog entries much of late. apparently not preparing digital photo entries much of late. apparently not downloading pictures that have been on camera far too long. apparently not caring all that much. but but but but it will come soonly. i promise. 09 May 2005i was productive & pontificating this weekend. saturday was spent sweatily pulling down boxes & furniture from my attic space in preparation for the move in three weeks time. who knew i had so much junk? it's a testament to my packrat tendencies, as many things have been in boxes since i moved into the place over three years ago. just a reminder that i have some purging to do (which included three trashbags of stuff yesterday). i also managed to take some books to a used bookseller. they took about 35 of my 50-some books. for those 35 books i got $12.45 in cash & $9.20 in a store credit. something seems not right here. the remaining books went to the good will nearby. yesterday afternoon i took a break from packing & purging to see PAPER CLIPS. it was really a beautiful reflection of how at the core we are all very human, indeed. a group of tennessee middle school students began studying the holocaust back in the late 1990s. in an effort to better visualize in a tangible way what the number 6 million (the number of jews exterminated during the holocaust) would look like, these students had a goal to collect 6 million paper clips. this documentary followed the project from beginning to end, showing all that went into it. the journey that the kids, teachers & dwellers of this small, economically-challenged tennessee town took, was indescribable. & by journey, i mean the emotional changes that occurred. it was apparent that some misconceptions & prejudices faded away as they realized that there are actual people behind the holocaust survivor & perisher stories. it took it beyond the 2d textbook image of an emaciated polish camp-dweller into the realm of a real, live survivor of some of the atrocities that occurred during WWII. the survivors stories, their desire to travel to this tiny town in the middle of nowhere to share with these students, & the care & attention to creating a memorial of this magnitude really does restore faith in some of humanity. go learn more about the holocaust. we are a unique generation in that we still have survivors with us. future generations will hear about it only through film or textbooks. go see THIS PROJECT'S WEBSITE. go read THIS BOOK ABOUT THE PROJECT, written by white house correspondents (& major participants in this project), peter schroeder and dagmar schroeder-hildebrand. and then, i quite simply urge you, go see this film. 06 May 2005kermit celebrated cinco de mayo with us last night. fun was had by all as will be evidenced by additional documentation. |
